In
November 1992, Fairburn converted from
a City operated solid
waste collection system
to a privately
operated system. The City
offers
refuse collection through a contractual
agreement
with Browning-Ferris Industries
(BFI)
for both residential and business collection.
Residential Refuse
Residential collection is done
once weekly at the
curb. Back door pickup is
provided to residential customers who are disabled or
infirm when no able-bodied household member
exists. Medical certification is required for
this service.
Commercial Refuse
Commercial dumpster customers may
be serviced from one to six times per week
based on the volume of waste generated.
Recycling
Fairburn has adopted an ordinance
making residential recycling of glass, newspaper,
magazines, plastics, aluminum, and tin mandatory.
The recyclable material is separated by the
customer from other waste products. Besides the
above material, residents may also recycle used
motor oil. Commercial recycling programs are
still being developed.
Yard Waste
Yard waste is collected by City
personnel using City owned equipment. Pickup is
once per month at curbside. Generally, three
people are required to perform this service,
working 2-4 days per month to cover the City.
Waste is chipped at curbside; citizens are
encouraged to reuse the material for landscaping
and mulching. The service is free unless the
debris volume is excessive.
